A UNIQUE SCHOOL FOR SINGERS TO BUILD THE DISCIPLINE, SKILLS AND UNDERSTAND THE ASPECTS OF BEING A VOCALIST ACROSS GENRES

About the School

Dedicated to discovering and rediscovering the joy of singing, Lilanoor Center for Voice and Music (LCVM) is open to students of all ages and backgrounds. It is a space for regular and intensive training, where we work to equip students with the skills and elements that make a singer.

Students today have the opportunity to pursue all kinds of musical genres, from pop, rock and jazz, to Hindustani and Carnatic classical music, to Western classical music and opera.

While certainly being a blessing, it also gives rise to the question of ‘what to pursue?’

Lilanoor Center for Voice and Music looks to impart quality training, accurate information, exposure and guidance across genres, allowing students to understand what each of them is really about.

With our team of passionate teachers across 2 departments, students will have the opportunity to be trained in and receive glimpses of vastly different universes of music, rich musical traditions from around the world with deeply diverse techniques, perspectives and approaches to sound, music, singing and the voice.

Courses We Offer

Students will be offered various kinds of classes

Western Music

Western Music covers a wide repertoire of music, from ancient Gregorian chants and medieval songs of ‘troubadours’, through the works of well-known composers like Mozart, Beethoven and Rameau, to modern composers of opera, art songs, oratorios, and various other genres.

We will work towards exploring current styles of music, their theoretical and practical bases and to find ways to innovate through creation of new music, use of technology while staying rooted to strengthening the voice, ear and breath and to find ways to be dynamic in tone and performance.

Indian Music

We believe that any form of music can be accessed by anyone curious about it irrespective of their social and economic background. Through our classes, we will try to understand Indian music in its many hues across genres like khayal, thumri, tappa, folk music, dhrupad and qawwali without falling into hierarchies between what is usually called high art or classical music and what is defined as ‘light’ or ‘semi-classical’ music. Such an approach calls for a new pedagogy through which Indian music can be learnt anew.

“The best part of Lilanoor is how all the instructors there mix a very high level of professionalism with such camaraderie and ease, that you learn difficult aspects of music while chatting and laughing and trying out…the time spent there passes before you know it,and when you go back and revise, you realise how much was achieved…so,yes,it’s a great place to discover or rediscover music….”

The Healing Power of Music

October 31st, 2022|

Across various cultures and times, music has been a source of solace and healing for many. Whether as a piece of art that is received or as a piece of work created, the processes of engaging with music are multidimensionally enriching and invigorating. Music is known to aid the body and mind in wellbeing and everyone, from infants to octogenarians have felt the power of music being a space for connection, for upliftment and growth. In this edition of The Journal, we explore the healing space that music creates, both as a tool for therapy as well as for being a therapeutic space. In a tete-a-tete with Celine Burlot, who is a teacher and music therapist at Lilanoor, we delve into the nitty gritties of Music Therapy.

Events Roundup

September 30th, 2022|

While our regular classes and modules have been ongoing, we've hosted and curated several events over the past few semesters - as a way to collaborate with other artists who we admire, and to engage with more diverse skills and audiences. These events have also given the faculty, the students and the entire Lilanoor family a platform to share, perform and learn more.

The Instrument and the Voice

August 31st, 2022|

Some love stories are eternal and among those, is the romance between the voice and the instrument, which have been intertwined for centuries, even millenia. Throughout the world, singers and instrumentalists are developing close relationships and collaborative research in duos, trios and larger ensembles. For this edition of the Lilanoor newsletter, we touch upon some of these connections, but delve deeper into Western classical music, which is in the spotlight this month at the LCVM. Through articles and interviews, we will discover the universe of a singer's favourite polyphonic instruments/instrumentalists, and how these special relationships have developed in the history of Western Classical Music. We will immerse ourselves in the dynamics between a singer and instrumentalists, the repertoires chosen, and the reason why these friendships, can sometimes last a whole career and a whole lifetime.
